 MAIL ART - Brief introduction

Throughout Art history, many were the media explored by Artists, in order to celebrate their creativity and disseminate their works trough the public and the Art world. It suddenly started, in the 60s, the movement known as “Mail Art” or “Correspondence Art”, which had as its main advantage the power to be self-sufficient in the case of Fine Arts, allowed to escape the circuit of art galleries as local exhibit opportunities not always exist. The artists could then make their work or part of it be enjoyed on an international scale without barriers and bureaucracy created by the usual places devoted to their exploitation. Besides the fact that, correspondence between artists, Mail Art enables the creation of a network of contacts where experiences can be shared. The same movement is still active today, sometimes it could be connected as an outsider or alternative movement, however, keeps many artists, as was the case of Ray Johnson's one of its main drivers.
Since this is a movement which has strong influences on Dadaism and Fluxus, however, it should be noted that some MailArtists claim that Mail Art began when Cleopatra had herself delivered to Julious Caesar in a rolled-up carpet (however this is not art or mail art ), but probably the first example of Mail Art is through a pictorial design that the English artist William Mullready (1786-1863) created to be printed on the envelopes of the "Penny Post" in Britain in 1840, and also W. Reginald Bray (1879-1939) know as "The Autograph King",  who in 1898 began testing the British postal system regulations by mailing all sorts of objects adorned only with a postage stamp. Eventually he mailed himself.
Briefly we can state that Mail Art is the creative process by which it is used as medium transmission the traditional postal service and, therefore, postcards, envelopes or stamps are some of the medium on which is possible the expression of art. The artists mainly use techniques such as collage, painting, drawing, writing, photography, digital art etc.., Apart from being a movement where everyone can participate, whether artists or not, just to retain a little rule that when someone sends something to another person, the same has no obligation to send something in return.
